2021 Side by Side: A Celebration of Service ™ brought together celebrities, military and health heroes over Memorial Day weekend for an unforgettable fundraising concert and televised event in honor of all who serve
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE) – Taking place on Memorial Day weekend this year Side by Side: A Celebration of Service ™ brought together celebrities, military and health heroes for an unforgettable benefit concert and televised event in honor of all who serve, and to raise funds for Northwell Health’s Military Liaison Services program.
Hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and produced by First tube media, highlights of last night’s live-streaming benefit include an in-person special for military and healthcare workers, presented by NE-YO from the top of One World Observatory; Gavin DeGraw play live from the rooftop of Lenox Health Greenwich Village in New York; and Katy Perry share an intimate conversation with John kelly, Northwell Health Military Liaison Services Program Care Coordinator, and Sean christensen, a veteran colleague with whom John connected through their shared experiences and who supported him in his transition to civilian life. Katy Perry closed the livestream with a set of her powerful anthems – “Roar”, “Fireworks”, and “Resilient” – with sincere dedication to John, Sean and all who serve.
“I learned from my new friends Sean Christensen and John Kelly that soldiers go through resilience training to make sure they are self-sufficient in combat,” said Katy Perry. “However, when they return home, it is often this very training that prevents them from seeking the help they need. These two military veterans are now working with Northwell to make sure our heroes returning from combat understand that asking for help doesn’t give up, it’s refusing to give up.
“I am very honored to be a part of this event,” said NE-YO. “It’s been twenty years since 9/11 and it means so much performance for first responders, veterans and everyone who has served this great city in, in this building that is a symbol of resilience.
“It really means a lot to me to be able to be a part of Side By Side,” said Gavin DeGraw. “A lot of my family was in the military so it touches me close to home, it’s my way of honoring them too. Being back in New York to perform is also very special, it really feels good to play live again.
PepsiCo, with a long history of supporting service members and our service members and women, is a proud sponsor of Side by Side: A Celebration of Service ™ whose benefit concert live in the company’s backyard in New York can be viewed in its entirety HERE.
Before the live benefit concert, the Side by Side: A Celebration of Service ™ televised event, produced in partnership with Al Roker Entertainment, aired on NBC4 New York on May 27 and opened with a moving performance of “Rise Up” by Northwell Health Nursing Choir. The program then shared first-hand testimonials about New York’s resilience from heroes like Bernie robinson who, having nearly died this year due to his work at the forefront of the Covid-19 pandemic, is back and better than ever. We also heard Sandra Lindsay, the nurse who was the first person in America to receive the Covid-19 vaccine; Scott strauss, a first responder of September 11 who helped save two port authority officers buried under “the pile”, and Michael dowling, President and CEO of Northwell Health, who more than a decade ago created the Northwell Military and Veterans Liaison Services Office and spoke about its importance.
“Side by side is our effort at Northwell to celebrate the service of so many people who give so much to the rest of us,” said Dowling. “We are very lucky and privileged to live in a free country and this is something we can never take for granted. It is because of these people who put their lives in danger by their service that allows us to live as we live, and we owe them an incredible debt of gratitude.
