The Continental Congress introduced the American flag at a time when the country was in the midst of the Revolutionary War and nearly every colony had its own flag.

The American Declaration of Independence made it absolutely necessary to introduce the universal American flag. On June 14, 1777, Congress passed a resolution outlining the purpose of a national flag for 13 colonies.

In 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher, encouraged his students to think about the meaning of the American flag. And then he proposed an annual observance of the national flag of America. The Chicago newspaper also published an article titled “June 14,” written by Bernard J. Cigrand. And he is considered the “Father of Flag Day” till today. Since then, the American flag has undergone 27 different transformations, including the addition of stars as new states joined the American union.

The current flag of America is the latest version which was introduced on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii was officially recognized as the 50th state of America and added to the American flag.

How do we celebrate Flag Day?
On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established National Flag Day on June 14. In 1949, President Harry Truman signed a law recognizing Flag Day as a national holiday, although it is not considered an official federal holiday.

Americans celebrate Flag Day by displaying the American flag in front of their homes or businesses.
