Regarding history, the palace is named after Maharaja Umaid Singh. He was the grandfather of the current owner, Gaj Singh. It was on November 18, 1929 that the foundation of the building was made by Umaid Singh but the construction work was not completed until 1943.

However, the king was only able to enjoy his creation for four years as he died in 1947. His successor Hanwant Singh also tragically died at a young age in 1952 in a plane crash. Later, Gaj Singh II succeeded his father and turned part of the palace into a hotel in 1971.
