Ghislaine Maxwell, confidante of Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested by the FBI
Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite and confidante of Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested by the FBI Thursday morning in New Hampshire, the FBI announced Thursday. Maxwell was arrested without incident and taken into custody around 8:30 a.m.
Maxwell, who is Epstein’s former girlfriend, washis alleged sex trafficking ring. Many women accused her of recruiting them to give Epstein massages, during which they were pressured into having sex. These charges, so far, have never resulted in criminal charges.
At a press conference officially announcing the charges, FBI Deputy Director Bill Sweeney said they had arrested “one of the bad guys.” According to Sweeney, Maxwell was arrested in Bradford, New Hampshire, after “slipping” into an area where she “continued to live a life of privilege.”
Acting US attorney Audrey Strauss declined to comment on how long Maxwell had been in New Hampshire, saying only: “This is where we found her this morning.”
The indictment, filed by the Southern District of New York, charges Maxwell with six counts, including “conspiracy to induce minors to travel to engage in unlawful sexual acts.” The indictment states that she “aided, facilitated and contributed to Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse of underage girls by, among other things, helping Epstein recruit, prepare and ultimately mistreat” girls under the age of 18 years.
According to the indictment, from “at least 1994”, Maxwell “has incited and trained several underage girls to engage in sexual acts with Jeffrey Epstein, by various means and methods”.
Strauss noted that the crimes in Epstein’s indictment would have lasted from 2002 to 2005, and called Maxwell’s indictment a “prequel” to that case.
“Maxwell first attempted to befriend some of Epstein’s underage victims prior to their abuse, including asking the victims about their lives, schools and families,” the act reads. charge. “Maxwell and Epstein would spend time forming friendships with underage victims, such as taking underage victims to the movies or shopping.”
The indictment alleges that Maxwell gave a false sense of security to the underage girls who were subsequently abused by Epstein, or by Maxwell herself.
“Maxwell’s presence during the underage victim’s interactions with Epstein, including interactions where the underage victim was undressed or involving sexual acts with Epstein, helped put victims at ease as an adult female was present,” we read in the indictment.
“For example, in some cases Maxwell would massage Epstein in front of an underage victim. In other cases, Maxwell encouraged underage victims to offer Epstein massages, including sexualized massages in which an underage victim would be wholly or partially. nude. Many of those massages led to Epstein sexually abusing underage victims. “
Maxwell is said to have cared for the victims by taking them to the movies or shopping, asking them about school, family and other aspects of their personal lives.
Maxwell then sought to normalize inappropriate and abusive behavior by, among other things, undressing in front of “a minor, and” being present “when a minor” undressed in front of Epstein, according to the indictment.
“Within the first year after meeting Maxwell and Epstein” the first minor identified in the case, Epstein began to sexually abuse the victim and “Maxwell was present and involved in some of these abuses ”, alleges the indictment.
Maxwell has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and called some of the claims against his “absolute garbage.”
The indictment alleges that, “in an effort to cover up her crimes, Maxwell repeatedly lied when asked about her conduct” during a 2016 deposition regarding then-ongoing civil litigation against Epstein .
On Thursday Strauss said: “Maxwell lied because the truth as alleged was almost unspeakable.”
Under oath, Maxwell said: “I had no idea that (Epstein) was having sex with anyone when I was with him other than myself.” Maxwell testified that she engaged in three ways with what the indictment identifies as a “blonde and brunette,” but said these were the only times Epstein engaged in any activity. sexual without his presence.
Maxwell claimed that “in the 1990s and 2000s” she was “unaware that Mr. Epstein was having sex with anyone other than (herself) and the blonde and the brunette.”
She further stated that she had never done a massage and was unaware that Epstein had sex toys or devices.
His arrest comes nearly a year after Epstein’s arrest on July 6, 2019. Epstein, a convicted sex offender, wasat the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Manhattan about a month later, in August of last year.
The 66-year-old has died by apparent suicide after more than a dozen lawsuits against his estate, alleging women and teenage girls were sexually abused, sometimes for years, at the hands of Epstein and his facilitators in homes in Manhattan, the Virgin Islands, Paris, New Mexico and Florida.
Maxwell is currently in the custody of the US Marshals. After a first hearing on Thursday, she will either be released on bail or detained. If released on bail, Maxwell will be granted a court date to appear in Manhattan.
As she is charged with federal crimes, she will be housed in a federal facility and may therefore be detained at, where Epstein died.
