Lifestyle Expert Shares Classic Gingerbread Cookie Recipe

(WTNH) – Celebrating the holidays can remind you of a favorite dish or cookie.

For lifestyle expert Caryn Antonini, these are gingerbread cookies. Antonini shares how to make his classic gingerbread people with a royal icing recipe.

¾ cup butter, softened

¾ cup packed brown sugar

cup of molasses

1 large egg

1 teaspoon of vanilla

3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ tablespoons of ground ginger

1 teaspoon of baking soda

½ teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1 teaspoon of ground cloves

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

In a large bowl, combine butter, brown sugar and molasses until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Stir in the egg and vanilla.

In a medium bowl, sift together all the dry ingredients – flour, ginger, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.

Combine sifted mixture with butter mixture on low speed until just combined. Don’t beat too much.

Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2-3 hours until firm.

Preheat the oven to 350F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Divide dough in half, spreading half out on cutting board or floured surface to ¼ inch thick. Use gingerbread cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Place on parchment-lined sheets about 1 inch apart. Bake for about 9 minutes or until lightly puffed and shaped. Let cool before removing from cookie sheet.

Repeat with the rest of the dough until the end.

Royal icing:

3 cups of powdered sugar

¼ cup light corn syrup

¼ cup of milk

¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract

Mix all the ingredients with a spoon until combined. Divide the frosting if you are using different colors. Enjoy!
