MHS royalty crowned on return | Schools
The Queen and King of Muskogee High School’s fall 2021 reunion each had expectations ahead of their coronation on Friday night.
“I really didn’t expect that to happen at all,” said reunion queen Jazmine Henry, a senior who represented volleyball. “I was never really a part of anything like this, I never had to dress, and most importantly I never expected to have a crown on my head.”
Senior Carnelle Brooks, who represented Spirit, said being crowned King was amazing.
âI kind of thought I was going to win, but I didn’t know,â he said. “I was shaking a lot.”
Representatives from 14 MHS groups and sports teams lined up on the football pitch during the coronation, which took place at half-time in the Rougher football game against Sand Springs. Unlike other Homecomings, this one did not have an escort. Each organization was represented by a student.
Brooks danced in joy when his name was called out and smiled when presented with a wooden scepter.
He said he spent much of Friday preparing for the coronation. It helped that MHS didn’t have classes during the day.
âI started styling my hair. I did a bunch of things,â he said. “I started very early, around 7 o’clock.”
Henry ran to the 50-yard line, hugging his brown dress, when his name was called out.
She said she started to prepare around 2:30 p.m. Friday. The top of her brown dress had an embroidered pattern and was trimmed with silver. She said she got it at Kimberly’s Prom and Bridal Boutique in Tahlequah.
âThey have the nicest dresses and this is the first one I’ve tried,â she said. “I love it. It has gypsy sleeves. I feel like a princess tonight.”
Henry said she would like to get a volleyball scholarship and play on a varsity team.
âIf that doesn’t happen, I would love to study interior design,â she said. “I don’t know where, maybe in Colorado.”
Brooks has said he hopes to study graphic design at a college in Texas, “possibly Southern University.”
Friday’s coronation featured organizations active during the fall. Organizations active in the spring will be involved in a spring crowning.
