Landowners in Nasomo village in Vatukoula last month received a royalty payment of more than $ 76,676 from the Fijian government.
This is their fair share of mining royalties for gold and silver mined by Vatukoula Gold Mines Limited.
A total of 123 registered landowners in the village of Nasomo received up to $ 885,500 after the enactment of the Fair Share of Mineral Royalties Act 2018.
The villagers invested $ 20,000 in Unit Trust of Fiji from this payment, making them the first royalty recipients to invest as a group.
So far, they have invested $ 60,000.
In addition, $ 1,230 was deducted for the Nasomo Community Fund to renovate their community hall and kindergarten.
The owners shared the balance of $ 55,446.
